This year’s injected flu vaccines are halal, the Fluenz – Nasal Flu Spray on the other hand contains traces of gelatin and therefore the answer is not clear cut.

The nasal flu spray is a live vaccine currently offered to children aged 2 to 18 years and contains traces of modified pork gelatin. It therefore raises concerns about acceptability to observant Muslims, especially given that alternatives are available. Children from the age of 6 months onwards can be vaccinated via the injected Quadrivalent flu jab which does not contain any gelatin.

At Fleet Street Clinic, we offer both Nasal and injected flu jabs for children and young adults. We are happy to discuss this prior to vaccination if you have any concerns.
