This year’s injected flu vaccines are halal, the Fluenz – Nasal Flu Spray on the other hand contains traces of gelatin and therefore the answer is not clear-cut.

The nasal flu spray is a live vaccine currently offered to children aged 2 to 18 years on the NHS and contains traces of modified pork gelatin. It therefore raises concerns about acceptability to observant Muslims, especially given that alternatives are available. Children from the age of 6 months onwards can be vaccinated via the injected Quadrivalent flu jab which does not contain any gelatin.

At Fleet Street Clinic, we do not expect to offer Fluenz Nasal Spray vaccine during the 2024/25 flu season. We currently only offer injected flu jabs for children, young adults and adults, and these are considered halal.
