Are Flu vaccines Halal?

This year’s injected flu vaccines are halal, the Fluenz – Nasal Flu Spray on the other hand contains traces of gelatin and therefore the answer is not clear cut.

The nasal flu spray is a live vaccine currently offered to children aged 2 to 18 years and contains traces of modified pork gelatin. It therefore raises concerns about acceptability to observant Muslims, especially given that alternatives are available. Children from the age of 6 months onwards can be vaccinated via the injected Quadrivalent flu jab which does not contain any gelatin.
